Representative J. Miller Condemns Passage of Senate Bill 83 out of the House Higher Education Committee

December 7, 2023
Joseph A. Miller, III News

COLUMBUS - After being added to the agenda less than 24 hours before the Higher Education Committee met yesterday, SB 83 (the Higher Education Destruction Act) passed out of committee with an 8-7 vote. The “yes” votes were from Reps. Young, Manning, Bird, Dean, Merrin, Santucci, Williams, and Willis. The “no” votes came from Representatives  J. Miller, Abdullahi, Lightbody, Pavliga, Pizzuli, Robinson, and Weinstein.

“Despite our best efforts to offer amendments to SB 83 to remove prohibited subjects for collective bargaining, remove provisions allowing administrators to call for ad hoc post-tenure review, and remove academic freedom provisions yesterday in committee, the Chair would not allow me to do so,” said Rep. Miller. “I hope to see more respect for the democratic processes by implementing committee rules that provide for transparency and input by Ohioans on all bills that come before the Higher Education committee in the future.”

Following committee passage, SB 83 awaits referral to the House Floor.
