Biography

State Representative Dennis Murray (D-Sandusky) is serving his first term as the voice of the 80th Ohio House District in northern Ohio, representing Erie County and most of Ottawa County.

Rep. Murray is a graduate of Huron High School (1980) and earned his bachelor’s degree (magna cum laude) and his law degree (cum laude) from Georgetown University. He returned to Murray & Murray Co., LPA, his family’s law firm in Sandusky where he practices as a trial attorney, working on cases dealing with economic issues, including contracts, antitrust, securities, and investor and banking fraud. He holds memberships in the American and Ohio State Bar Associations.

In 2005, the voters of Sandusky elected him as a city commissioner. Rep. Murray quickly earned the respect of his colleagues and became ex-officio Mayor (President of the Commission). In that role, Rep. Murray led efforts to protect the area’s natural resources and promote its long-term economic viability. He led water regionalization negotiations and completed the Waste Water Treatment Partnership Agreement with Erie County. He co-founded Erie County’s Alternative Energy Task Force and organized the Community-Wide Economic Development Task Force.

In addition to his political and legal work, Rep. Murray has immersed himself in his community. He is a lector and Eucharistic minister and formerly co-chaired the Sts. Peter & Paul Church Pastoral Council. He also served for many years as director of the Sandusky Central Catholic Education Foundation. He is a member of on the Erie and Ottawa County Township Trustees Associations, Green Energy Ohio and the NAACP.

In the House, Rep. Murray serves as Vice Chair of the Civil and Commercial Law committee, as well as a member of the Agriculture and Natural Resources, Economic Development and Alternative Energy committees.

Rep. Murray and his wife Martha have four children in school: Nolan, Mary, Melanie and Kelly.

Responsibilities

A State Representative is an elected official whose job is to serve as a direct link between those Ohioans he or she was elected to represent and state government. In order to best fulfill this role, a representative responds to constituent concerns and works to provide solutions through legislative action. In order to best serve their constituents, a state representative attends meetings of their local civic, social and business groups in addition to responding to mail, email and telephone correspondence from constituents in their district.
