Biography

State Representative Jim Zehringer is currently serving his second term in the Ohio House of Representatives, after receiving his initial appointment in February 2007. He represents the 77th House District, which encompasses Mercer and Preble counties as well as portions of Darke County.

As a member of the legislature, Representative Zehringer has become particularly involved in several important policy areas. As a farmer, he has been very active in addressing pressing agricultural issues along with responsible stewardship for the land. He also was the vice-chair of the regulatory reform taskforce and is working closely with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address regulatory concerns. Other areas of legislative interest include economic development, insurance, reducing costs for law enforcement and protecting judges and magistrates from assault.

In addition to his work in the Legislature, Representative Zehringer also is the owner and operator of the Meiring Poultry and Fish Farm, which has received several awards for its outstanding environmental practices. He previously served as a Mercer County Commissioner from 2002 to 2007. Representative Zehringer is the recipient of many awards, including the National Environmental Stewardship Award and Ohio Environmental Stewardship Award.

Representative Zehringer remains active in his community through his involvement with organizations such as the Farm Bureau, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and the Fort Recovery Historical Society.

Representative Zehringer is a graduate of Fort Recovery High School. He and his wife Sharon reside in Fort Recovery and have three children, Julie, John and Kristy, and two grandchildren.

Responsibilities

A State Representative is an elected official whose job is to serve as a direct link between those Ohioans he or she was elected to represent and state government. In order to best fulfill this role, a representative responds to constituent concerns and works to provide solutions through legislative action. In order to best serve their constituents, a state representative attends meetings of their local civic, social and business groups in addition to responding to mail, email and telephone correspondence from constituents in their district.
