Biography

State Representative Matt Patten (D-Strongsville) is a proud Northeast Ohio native. He is honored to be serving his first term as the voice of the 18th Ohio House District, which includes Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, Berea, Strongsville and North Royalton.

The grandson of Irish immigrants, Rep. Patten learned early the value of close family and close community. He was born and raised on Cleveland’s West side, and his history of organization and public service gives him a solid foundation for his new career in state government.

Rep. Patten’s family paved a proud path for him into the realm of public service. His father served on Brook Park City Council for 12 years before stepping down to work for his UAW Local. His mother is on the Berea City School Board, and his wife was a special education teacher.

Rep. Patten began his own career as a community organizer, working with citizens and community organizations to improve the quality of life for residents and bring opportunity to areas that needed it. He currently works as a labor-management field coordinator, collaborating with community and business leaders to find solutions that will benefit everyone.

Rep. Patten plans to spend the 128th General Assembly focusing on issues that are vital not only to residents of the 18th House District, but to all Ohioans, such as education, health care, economic opportunity, and senior issues.

He was appointed Vice Chair of the Commerce and Labor committee and is a member of the Health Access and Affordability; Ways and Means; and Alternative Energy and Brownfield Development committees.

Rep. Patten and his wife Katherine both grew up in the 18th Ohio House District and graduated from Berea High School. They have three young children.
